A New Year Above the Clouds: My Journey to Khirganga

"Sometimes, the best way to welcome a new year is not with fireworks, but with the silence of the mountains."

The Beginning: A Journey Through Changing Landscapes

On December 28th, I set off from Jalandhar, heading towards an adventure that would push my limits and leave me with memories for a lifetime. After a stop at Chandigarh, I made my way to Manikaran, a town famous for its Gurudwara and natural hot springs. The winding roads, the crisp mountain air, and the anticipation of what lay ahead filled me with excitement.

By December 30th, I had reached Kalga, a peaceful village hidden in the Parvati Valley. Surrounded by apple orchards and wooden houses, it felt like stepping into another world—one where time moved slowly, and life felt simpler.

The Trek: A Battle Against My Limits

On December 31st, I began the 24-kilometer trek to Khirganga. The path wound through dense pine forests, crossed wooden bridges, and followed the sound of flowing streams. Each step brought a new sight, a new challenge, and a deeper connection with nature.

This trek wasn’t just a physical challenge—it was personal. Having breathing issues, the climb was difficult. There were moments when I had to stop, catch my breath, and push myself forward. But I refused to give up. Every uphill stretch tested my endurance, but with each small victory, I felt a newfound strength growing within me.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped for a break and had the most refreshing nimbu pani with jaljeera. The tangy burst of flavors mixed with the cool mountain air was nothing short of magical. Sometimes, it’s the simplest joys that make a journey unforgettable.

"The mountains don’t ask how strong you are. They show you what you’re capable of."

Reaching Khirganga: A Moment of Stillness

Hours later, I reached the summit. The moment was surreal—my first encounter with snow. The sight of the white landscape stretching endlessly, the soft crunch under my boots, the icy air filling my lungs—it was everything I had imagined and more.

Nestled in this paradise stood the Shiva-Parvati Temple, an ancient site believed to be where Lord Shiva meditated for centuries. According to legend, Goddess Parvati once bathed in the nearby hot spring, and its milky-white waters are said to have divine healing properties. Standing there, I could feel the spiritual energy of the place, as if the mountains themselves carried whispers of the past.

I dipped my feet into the warm water, and in that instant, all the exhaustion from the trek melted away. It wasn’t just relief from sore muscles—it was something deeper. A sense of peace I hadn’t felt in a long time.

"Some places don’t just take your breath away; they give it back."

A New Year in the Mountains

As the clock struck midnight, I stood under a sky full of stars, celebrating the new year in a way I never had before. No loud parties, no flashing lights—just silence, the warmth of a bonfire, and the company of strangers who felt like old friends.

"Not every celebration needs noise. Sometimes, the quietest moments are the loudest in your heart."

The Journey Back: Carrying the Mountains With Me

On January 1st, I made my way back to Kalga. The descent was easier, but my heart felt heavier. Leaving behind the mountains, the snow, and the sense of stillness I had found wasn’t easy.

Before heading home, I wandered through the lively streets of Kasol, picking up souvenirs and soaking in the last bits of this experience. Every small trinket I bought felt like a piece of the mountains I could take with me.

As I sat on the bus, staring out at the receding peaks, I realized something—this wasn’t just a trip. It was a lesson in resilience, in slowing down, in appreciating the simple things.

"If you ever feel lost, climb a mountain. You might just find yourself at the top."
